EU Travel Day 6 - Amsterdam By Day August 13, 2007
As a result of having a few drinks and a few smokes last night, I slept quite heavily and had a little trouble waking up. After getting out of bed at 10:30, we booked another night in Zeeburg and bought another half loaf of bread for a round of brilliantly good sandwiches such as cheese, peanut butter, ham, and sandwich spread. That wasn’t sarcasm either, we loved them. Unfortunately, we’re having a hard time finding camping gas so pasta is off the menu for the time being.
We got a tram back into Amsterdam to see it by day this time. We’d also read a little more about it so we weren’t wandering around so aimlessly. Don’t get me wrong, aimless wandering is a great way to learn about a city but it’s good to see a few tourist attractions too.
We went to the Torture Museum first. There’s some nasty shit in there. It gave me chills seeing some of the torture devices, ranging from thumb clamps to a Judas Chair. A Judas Chair is, well, actually, it’s summed up well on Wikipedia:
Judas Chair/Cradle
“The Judas Chair was a pyramid-shaped seat used for torture. The victim was placed on top of it, with the point inserted into their anus or vagina, then very slowly lowered by ropes. Some theories suggest that the intended effect was to stretch the orifice over a long period of time, or to slowly impale. The victim was usually naked, adding to the humiliation already endured.”
Oh, there was also a massive saw used to cut upside-down people in half, starting at the arse.
To negate the effects the torture museum had on our minds, we went to the Heineken Brewery and took a tour. It’s no longer in use any more, but this meant we got to walk in the fermentation tank without getting wet. Although it was seemingly pricey at 11 euros, it included three lagers and a classy bottle opener. It also included a very strange ride on a horse-carraige simulator, where we rode around Amsterdam delivering Heineken.
After all that, we wandered around for a few hours, bought some more cheese, saw the prostitutes in daylight and then found an internet cafe, and that brings you up to date!
We’ve taken a few photos but it seems like we might have a difficult time sharing them for a while, but I’ll be sure to get them up when I can. Bye!
