EU Travel Day 22 - A Giant Cathedral August 29, 2007
Today we drove into Köln (that’s Cologne in German see). This time the city driving was far more forgiving, but there seems to be incredibly agressive drivers… I miss the nice, laid-back Dutch.
Kölner Dom
The first thing to notice in Cologne was the massive and incredibly intricate cathedral. As we all know, it’s the seat of the Archbishop of Cologne, under the administration of the Roman Catholic Church and is dedicated to Saint Peter and the Blessed Virgin Mary. It’s also 157 metres tall so it’s pretty hard to miss.
I hope somebody is currently feeling smarmy after catching me using Wikipedia there and looking forward to exposing me, because I’m pre-empting your strike and admitting it right here. Ha!
We had some of the local food, in this case Currywurst und pommes frites (curried sausage and chips) for myself, and Bockwurst (big hotdog) for Martyn. We also had some pretzels.
Looks like cheese…
If you’re planning to go to Cologne and you like chocolate, you may be suprised to find out that the Lindt Chocolate Museum is not for you. Well, maybe if you care about how much more efficient Cocoa extractors are in recent times or the 10% rise in trade of Cocoa butter in 1984 then it could be. That was a made up fact. I couldn’t possibly remember the inane bollocks printed on the info boards.
To put things in perspective, we saw some chocolate that was made to look like cheese and that was the soaring highlight of our tour. The bizarre slogan on the box was “Looks like cheese but tastes like Mama Mooo”… weird.
That was this afternoon, and the evening’s activities of finding somewhere to have a quiet beer are yet to begin. Tata for now!
