EU Travel Day 28b - Chunks Blown Unto A Tram September 12, 2007

by Dave

Since Martyn doesn’t remember much after we left the Blue Man Group show, I’m going to take it from there.

We took a train from Potsdammerplatz back to Zoologischer Garten (the main travel hub), getting off the train twice to scout for bars.  We’d decided to go for a “few beers” after the show.  We didn’t find any bars near the stations we got off at, but it didn’t really matter since trains were going down the line every ten minutes.  We passed some time at one station when I bet Martyn I could run down the stairs, across the street, and up to the opposite platform in 30 seconds or less.  Although I won the bet, I apparently lost a lot of credability if looks from strangers in a quiet city metro station are anything to go by.

We caught an internet cafe shortly before it closed and searched google for a rock club in Berlin.  We quickly found one and headed out for it, this time travelling out to Alexanderplatz, and walking to RockBar at Magnet Club.  We got sat down on a step with some beers, waiting for the music to pick up from the indie to the rock, punk and ska as advertised on the website.  After about half an hour this hadn’t happened and we were starting to get a bit bored.  I went for a piss, and found the punk room on the way to the toilets.  Ah.

The music suited our tastes for about half an hour, and got into a serious groove just before the onslaught of emo music took over for the remainder of the night.  Of course at the time, we didn’t know that the music was not to return to our personal tastes, so we passed the time by drinking… quite a lot.

It was strange, we’d drank a similar amount, and I was still sober enough to read German train timetables, and we normally handle our alcohol similarly well, but not today.  After Martyn had finished leaving his mark on the paving of the beer garden, we set off for what was to be a 3-hour trek home involving semi-digested beer being left in a tram-stop, on a tram, on the street, outside a chip shop and very nearly on a policeman.  A tram, a train, a bus, and a night-bus later we fell into another drunken slumber.  Worth it.
