EU Travel Day 26 - The Game Of Death September 4, 2007

by Dave

After sleeping til about 1pm (the forfeit rule doesn’t apply after a long night of drinking), we drove to the local supermaket to find it’s closed on Sundays.  Shite.

After eating four sandwiches, we left some jam out to see if it would interest the local ants, but they must’ve suspected the kind gesture was a trap, despite the bridge I made out of twigs into the dish, and there was no takers.  I sat around and played guitar a bit, and wrote some more lyrics for “My Arse Went To Belgium”.

Later, we met three Korean guys who brought snacks and beers to our tent, and we sat and drank with them.  After we’d exchanged names, ages, and learnt of eachother’s home countries, we got down to serious business:  Playing Mario Kart and doing shots.  After we were slightly annebriated, we got out a deck of cards and taught them to play hearts with drinking penalties.  It turns out that irresponsible drinking is a great way to overcome a language barrier, by the way.  We also ate the cornflake cake between us.  We didn’t mention the fox (day 24).

Speaking of our bushy-tailed little friend, he decided to make a second appearance and invaded our game of hearts.  This time I was having none of it and chased it around screaming profanities (any children should’ve been asleep, so it was okay to swear).  It kept on coming back though and everyone joined in with running after it, shouting, and taking photos.  For anyone who’s missed the previous apologies, we’re having trouble getting the photos onto internet cafe computers, but we’ll share them when we can.

Disaster almost struck when the beer ran out, but that was solved by a half hour walk to a local petrol station that sold beer.  We bought 18 bottles between us and got seated on a patch of grass opposite.  It was time for us to learn some Korean drinking games.  First up was 3-6-9, in which players count upwards from one, and clapping in the place of any number that contains a three, six, or nine.  The other game we learnt was The Game Of Death.  In this game, we chanted some Korean words that I cannot remember due to the alcohol, and then somebody shouted a number and we all pointed at another player at random.  Then, we’d follow the pointing of arms the required number of steps and they’d drink.

Beer bottles all empty, we walked back to the camp site, posed on a model bear for a photo (buddy bears, they have them all over Berlin), and retired to our tents for the night.  Everyone agreed it had been an awesome night, and I could write twice as much as I did here but we’re on metered time here!
