EU Travel Day 47 - My First Taste of Beer(fest) October 2, 2007
Since I arrived back in Munich late on Saturday night I pretty much went straight to bed, save a brief period where drunken Dave came and woke me up for a chat and a catch-up of our time apart.
Morning came and predictably, after my long day of travelling, and Dave’s long day of drinking, we overslept. We finally got out and about and on the way to Oktoberfest. It was ridiculously busy, packed to bursting point because of a massive parade that went on for a good few hours. We decided it was going to be impossible to get a table in one of the tents in order to get a beer, so we headed off to have a look around Munich instead.
Dave realised it was almost midday and said the clock tower in Marienplatz (The city centre) did something special only 3 times per day. Midday was one of these special times so we headed in that direction, me in eager anticipation.
What an over-hyped load of old shit this clock was. A glorified coo-coo clock with not much coo-cooing. Dave of course thought this was hilarious having witnessed the pitiful display the day before with the girls. Tourists it seems, will watch anything.
The rest of the day was spent wandering around Munich taking in the sights and sounds. We visited the English Garten which is a big park in the city centre, loads of fountains and churches, and what looked like a miniature version of the Victory Tower from Berlin. We also took in some live music in another, smaller, park whilst Dave juggled to his hearts content and I lazed on the grass.
The girls text us to come find them at the festival so we headed back to the camp site for some food and a change of clothes before heading to meet them. We couldn’t find them because the festival was still jam packed with people so we settled for a table outside of one of the tents and had our first maß. Which is basically a litre of beer. Lovely.
After our beers we had a wander around and Dave went on a massive 50m high ride which I foolishly promised to go on the next day. We headed home and went to bed safe in the knowledge that tomorrow, we would do Oktoberfest properly!
