EU Travel Day 66 - Rome Wasn’t Built in a Day October 18, 2007
We headed into Rome early but were delayed due to the Urban Trains being on the blink. After being told by some other English tourists that there was no other way into the city we managed to find out there was a bus and a tram which would get us there. Silly English people.
We wandered around checking out all the various tourist attractions listed on our map, whilst simultaneously trying to avoid the frequent downpours. We saw the famous Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon (Which we found by accident looking for shelter in the rain), The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the Coliseum (On the way to which we were ripped off on a fruit stand, €3 for a peach and €1 for an apple!), the Arc of Constantine and various ruins, as well as the old Circus Maximus.
On return to the campsite we decided to make good use of our new food courtesy of the Irish. We made “Tomato Pasta Stuff” which involved no less than 5 ingredients! Oh yes!
After that we sat in the car to avoid the cold, we busied ourselves with reading and playing on the DS until a knock came at the window. It turned out to be a Slovenian by the name of Jan, who was inviting us for a beer. We eagerly accepted and soon met Eva his, also Slovenian, girlfriend. We had a big long chat mainly about music and alcohol and shared quite a few drinks. Me and Dave brought €5 for 5 litres wine and the 80% stuff to the table. The Slovenian’s were slightly more classy, bringing a nice Chianti, a smooth white wine, beer and an expensive Scotch.
